Devices Management / Limit Devices on mobile app

Specifically looking for a UX pattern/behavior that addresses the best way to handle device management on mobile.

Ex.: user creates login credentials -> subscribe to the app (paid) -> share his credentials with other people so they don't need to pay themselves

Currently, we do this by allowing 2 devices tops per user, meaning every time you log in from a new device, the app logs it and at your third device we send you an activation code and require you select one of the two current devices to switch with the new one

To me, this looks like a terrible experience, but considering we also have premium users that are paying more specifically to have a shareable account (for groups) I would still need a way to limit access in some ways.

Thoughts? Suggestions?
