How do you install a nagios plug-in or patch?

This may be a basic question, but I have absolutely no idea how to do this. And I've looked everywhere online and I haven't found a decent article or instructions how to do so. So perhaps some of you know?

How do you install a plug in like the following in nagios?

https://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Plugins/Operating-Systems/Linux/check_os_updates/details

I downloaded that file and I have no idea what to do with it. I've tried moving it to plugins directory and then execute but that doesn't seem to be the way.

Moreover occasionally they have patches for plugins with a .patch extension, like this:

https://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Plugins/Operating-Systems/Linux/check_ubuntu_packages-2Epatch/details

And I really don't know what to do with that either. I've tried using the patch command to apply but that doesn't seem to work, I think somewhere I read you have to apply it to the source and recompile? But that would be insanely dumb and inefficient to do so. So maybe I am missing something?

Sorry If I am missing something very obvious, but I can't see it.
